I loved The Merchant of Venice! It was fast-paced, entertaining, and laugh-out-loud funny.
Here are some thoughts:
I initially thought that I was going to dislike Portia because she talks about how Bassanio being her "lord" and the boss and all that misogynistic jazz but then she did the whole 'Saving Antonio's Life' thing and she became one of my all-time favorite Shakespeare characters - maybe even characters, period. You go, girl.
The Merchant of Venice is just another testament to how masterful a writer Shakespeare was, especially as it concerned characterization. Shakespeare's characters are complex and whole - in the case of Shylock and Antonio, for example, who is the villain and who is the hero? Sure, Shylock is crazy for demanding a pound of flesh from Antonio, but he has been ridiculed and humiliated by Antonio just for being Jewish. And Antonio seems like a great guy, but he is clearly anti-Semitic. I love that Shakespeare shows that good and bad coexist within anyone and everyone, and the lines between who is good and who is bad are often blurry.
It's so good. I mean honestly, The Merchant of Venice is just so brilliant.
